Software companies young and old who spend any time at all keeping up with the macro trends in the software industry, or the 'micro' trends in their own product or vertical niche, it's hard to miss the topic of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). SaaS has been touted as one of the fastest growing segments in the software market, with growth rates in the 25% to 35% range, and has undoubtedly piqued the curiosity of providers of software and their customers alike to ask questions like "what is SaaS?" or "what does my company have to do to take advantage of SaaS?" or "how will a SaaS offering benefit my company?" to "how will a SaaS offering impact my company?", and many more. Simply put, there is much to learn about all aspects of the SaaS model, and we’re still very early in the game.
The intention of this blog is not to promote Progress Software as a player in the SaaS market, but more to try and raise the awareness of issues we believe are important to consider, share information and experience which may help in the service development process, and to help look beyond the marketing to the real issues that could be critical to the success of a SaaS offering. As any company's SaaS offering is much more than the application itself, this blog will address topics outside of the technology realm, including channel development and partnering, what it means to be a services company, market evolution, business and strategy, go-to-market and marketing, and of course some technical topics.
